Venue: Paignton Parish Church
Date: June 28th 2019
Time: 1.30pm to 3.30pm
Background
Through the eager requests of local gardening and community groups, plus allotment and leisure garden society members, Co-ordin8 held a community composting event. The idea behind this was to promote information on how to successfully ‘compost’ at home by learning how to identify which materials to use and which not to use, in order to make useful garden compost at home.
Nicky gets down to the nuts and bolts on a microscopic level. Nicky Scott and our guests listen and watch avidly.
Dr Compost
Local and international composting expert Nicky Scott AKA ‘Dr Compost’ came and gave the talk for us one sunny Friday afternoon in late June. (In case you did not know, Nicky helped to initially set up ‘Proper Job’ Recycling Centre, Chagford and was the founding member of ‘Don’t’ Let Devon Go to Waste’. Author of: ‘Devon Community Composting Information’, plus ‘Reduce, Re-use, Recycle’, ‘How to Make and Use Compost’ and various other Publications available from ‘Green Books’, Dartington,) He has worked in partnership and collaboration with the Open, Plymouth, Exeter and Southampton Universities, local and county councils in promoting how to reduce landfill waste through composting and how to use compost when made. SchooIs and City Farm educational programmes… I could go on and on!
The Man Himself with two of the magic ingredients. Co-ordin8 Plant Stall… offering bargains galore.
Knowledge to share
Nicky gave a very interesting, useful and illuminating talk. By request he offered an open questions and answer session afterwards. We could have easily listened to him for another two hours as he had so much knowledge to share.
Fifty locally produced Tiger Worms for £1.50p….Bargain! Co-ordin8 ‘Wormery Starter Kits.’
Gardening students from Co-ordin8 were also in the audience and helped with setting up the event and running a successful plant stall also offering starter wormery culture kits. An afternoon tea was also kindly put on with help from other Co-ordin8 students and staff and as this was a free entry event a suggested voluntary donation was provided by our visitors for the refreshing cuppas and tasty cakes. Monies raised will helpfully go towards materials for the Co-ordin8 ‘Grow it, Cook it, Eat it’ Allotment.
Future talk
The event was well attended and there has been much interest from the attendees for a possible future talk by Nicky on ‘The Private Life of The Compost Heap’. (He has made films on this too, showing compost bug life as never seen before!)
Brian enjoys a slice after all his helpful involvement. Tea and Cakes made by Co-ordin8 Students and Staff were enjoyed by all at the end of the event for a small donation.

Nicky can also be found on Youtube, simply type in ‘Composting with Nicky Scott’ and enjoy some very informative videos.
Co-ordin8 also circulated a sample survey on community composting. This was to identify local interest and need from the community.
Many thanks to Jenny Aherne for attracting funding for this event.
