Co-ordinArt Visiting Artist: Colin Brandi

November 12, 2019 By Clive Burton Leave a Comment

As part of enriching our student’s learning journey in art and culture Co-ordin8 hosts direct appearances from visiting local artists. The benefit behind this being that students will be part of a genuine master class and enjoy seeing, touching and learning about other art methods, media uses and styles, plus be able to directly experience working alongside professional artists. The idea behind this allowing for plenty of new ideas to be gained and useful questions to be asked.

As part of this Colin Brandi (BA Art and Design Birmingham University) and a fine art textilist and ceramicist visited one of our Wednesday Sessions in order to demonstrate colour, texture and pattern through fabric.

Colin brought in a range of his own pieces that have also been used in local and national exhibitions. The day was very well received by our students who gained great inspiration from Colin’s work and his ability to communicate his sophisticated colour philosophies at all levels in order that everyone gained from the experience.

Students were inspired to produce an assortment of patterns using colour and Sue Cox went on to create her own multi-media textile piece.

Colour texture and pattern are key components of his intricate work.
  • Some of Colin’s pieces were very large as they have been used in public spaces as installations.
  • The colours that Colin had used within his work were identified and new ones learnt by our students.
  • The students just loved touching the pieces and exploring the different textures and colour effects.
  • Colin brought in some historic and traditional pieces from his private collection and from all over the World…some of these told a story.
Colin Brandi developed ideas of pattern, colour and shape for the students to take part in as a fun exercise using paper, pens and IT.
Students were inspired to use textiles to create their own pieces.

Students in other sessions took inspiration from Colin’s visit. Jean makes a patchwork and Dale creates a cushion cover.

Sue Cox was inspired and completed a multi-media piece that she had been working on for some time. Colin and Sue discussed techniques and materials. Colin was very impressed with her work, as were her fellow students. This work was so good that it is to go into one of our own exhibitions. The needle craft involved is extremely good for developing and maintaining fine hand motor skills.
  • Colin brought in lots of samples to explore.
  • A  fellow enthusiast joined the group also to gain some valuable advice and meet our students.
