Explore Art

January 30, 2023 By Co-ordin8 team Leave a Comment

Students visit local art galleries and historic places in Torbay, both indoors and outside to learn more about art. They also created some of their own artwork whilst exploring sites…

Liz Jones studies an oil painting of a winter scene at Torre Abbey Mansion. ‘It was painted in 1904 by a man called Harrison Compton. I like the way that he did the sky, water and rocks. It must have taken him ages! I had a go at copying some of it.’

Liz also studied another painting from 1912 at The Abbey and sketches it. This one was by a Mr Hacker.

Liz’s interpretation of Hacker’s view of a busy London street with St Paul’s Cathedral in the distance.

Liz also likes a picture which was a study in oils of horses being ridden.

Another interpretation. ‘Such is Life’ by Weedon Grossmith who was a student of The Royal Academy, 1885.

Liz said, ‘The reason why I like Torre Abbey Gallery is because a lot of the pictures are very old and this makes them more interesting for me. Also galleries and museums are often nice and quiet. That makes them really peaceful places to be in.’

An Apple a Day

November 9, 2022 By Co-ordin8 team Leave a Comment

Co-ordinate students from the Friday Allotment Group get to learn and taste some locally produced fruit back at base in the classroom…

Apples were a big hit with over a dozen different varieties to try, from cider apples to cookers and eaters.
Apples on the allotment.
Before…
After…

More apples are brought harvested and brought in for another session and everyone has a go at using the ‘French apple peeling machine.’ The apples are cored, peeked and sliced all in one go and under 30 seconds each! The peeled fruit was put into water to stop it discolouring and then cooked up with a little sugar and cinnamon and served up with some hot creamy custard…

Liz said: ‘This reminds me of when my Dad used to cook for me. He was a chef and very clever. He liked to cook very healthy food with fresh fruit and veg.’

‘I love fruit…it’s my favourite and good for me to eat and helps people to lose weight.’

All sorts of apples were picked.

‘Pendragon’ was very tasty, with pink flesh and strawberry flavour!
