Co-ordin8 students and staff have recently been seeing if they can put together a half a mile of pennies at The Coverdale Hall, Paignton Parish Church. Following the appeal, coppers were collected, tables were set out and lines of pennies were painstakingly placed in line. All hands were on deck to help as over 5,000 individual coins had to be set out.
Shane Robinson, tutor with Co-ordin8 said: ‘A grand total of an eighth of a mile was achieved, which was not quite as far as the target but non the less the effort was amazing and was of benefit not only as a fund raiser but also a fun exercise in counting, measuring, maintaining and improving dexterity and fine motor skills.
“When tallied up this amounted to over £200!
“So a big thank you for all of the kind support from local students, parents, carers, friends and the public in donating their spare coppers to help make this such a fantastic event. All of our service users will directly benefit from all the monies raised as it will be used to purchase new materials and equipment for their sessions.’
Brian and Stephen gather up the coins that have been generously donated! Shane has to lift the bottle of pennies as it was too heavy for anyone else! Tables lined up, pennies shared out and everyone ready to go! Action! Striped wall paper helped tp keep things on the right tracks! Some coin dates proved interesting and with so many coins we had to add another layer of paper. Phew, we got there in the end! We raised over £200 on the big count-up. Coins, coins, coins! And celebrated with some Red Nose Day Cakes that Jenny’s group had made. An eighth of a mile of pennies were lined up in all. ( £200 approx.) Money was raised for Red Nose Day too from the sale of Cakes.
